The process of collecting a buccal swab sample involves several steps:

  1. The subject should avoid eating, drinking products 30 minutes prior to collection.
  2. The collector should wash or sanitize their hands, and then put on personal protective equipment like gloves and a mask.
  3. The collector carefully removes the swab from its package, being sure not to touch the swab tip with their gloves or against any surfaces.
  4. The subject opens their mouth and the collector rubs and rotates the swab along the inside of the cheek for 5-10 seconds, ensuring that the entire swab tip has made contact with the cheek.
  5. The process is repeated on the other side of the mouth with the same swab.
  6. The swab is then removed, being careful not to touch the swab tip against the teeth, lips, or other surfaces.
  7. The swab should be allowed to air dry before it is placed in a closed container for storage.
  8. The tube or envelope containing the swab is labeled with identifying information, sealed, and stored at room temperature or transferred to the freezer until testing
